        HERS Index

        Picture

The HERS Index provides an easily understandable means to compare the relative energy efficiency of different homes.

The lower a home's HERS Index, the more energy efficient it is in comparison to the HERS Reference Home.

Each 1-point decrease in the HERS Index corresponds to a 1% reduction in energy consumption compared to the HERS Reference Home.  Thus a home with a HERS Index of 85 is 15% more energy efficient than the Reference Home and a home with a HERS Index of 80 is 20% more energy efficient.

The HERS Index, and the RESNET standards used to create it, are officially recognized by the federal government for verification of building energy performance for such programs as federal tax incentives, the Environmental Protection Agency's ENERGY STAR program and the U.S. Department of Energy's Building America Program.

The HERS Index is the most widely accepted home energy efficiency measure and is the basis for many other measures today like the "new" Energysmart Home E-Scale.  It has changed over the years to reflect improvements in energy efficiency building codes or standards and remains the most widely respected measure today.
